Students from the diploma programme Communication Design and Media have dealt with the topic of domestic violence. Implementation of a poster series by Malene Sparka and Jasmin Kordys in cooperation with Terre des Femmes e.V. and Wall GmbH.

Result by the students Malene Sparka and Jasmin Kordys
The works shown here were designed by Malene Sparka and Jasmin Kordys. Together with Terre des Femmes e.V. and Wall GmbH, they were published in around 250 City Light boxes at prominent locations in Berlin from 22 February 2022 to 2 March 2022. The special feature of the poster series is that both sides of domestic violence become visible: Not being visible and the suffering of those affected. The signs of violence, such as bruises, strangulation marks or the leather belt in the hand, only become visible on the posters in the CityLight boxes when darkness falls.

Project description
Covid-19 has radically changed all our lives. Less outside, more inside. Less contact, more alone. Less retreat, more being at the mercy of others. This is the "new normal" for victims of domestic violence - mostly women and children, rarely men. And nobody sees it, because it happens behind closed doors. What is particularly macabre about it is that it is happening at a time when, for good reason, there is a public demand: "Stay at home. Protect yourselves and others."

In this project, students from the Communication Design and Media diploma programme dealt with the issue of domestic violence. A problem that is always important and especially so in times of pandemic. The forms, causes and possible solutions were examined and a wide variety of communication solutions were developed. From posters and spots to social media and apps to installations or social experiments, everything could be considered. Photographic, illustrative, typographic works and beyond were all conceivable, because it's not the medium that counts, but the clever idea.
