Light Symposium 2025

Call for Papers

Responsible lighting

Abstract submissions on the topic of 'Responsible Lighting' are open until 15 June 2025.

(Wismar/ Germany) The 11th Light Symposium, organised by the international Master's programme Architectural Lighting Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences' Faculty of Design, will take place from Thursday, 23 October to Friday, 24 October 2025. The conference will be held in person in the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The conference language is English. Contributions to the conference in the form of short abstracts can be submitted online until Sunday 15 June 2025 via the ConfTool event management system www.conftool.net/light-symposium-2025.

The specialist conference “Light Symposium” was initiated by Prof. Michael F. Rohde from the Architectural Lighting Design Master's programme at Wismar University of Applied Sciences in 2008. Rohde retired on 1st September 2024, making Prof. Jan Blieske the new contact person for the specialist event at Wismar University of Applied Sciences.

This specialist event is organised annually by four partners from Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden on a rotating basis. These are Aalborg University, Copenhagen (AAU); Wismar University of Applied Sciences; the University of South-Eastern Norway, Kongsberg (USN); and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). The Light Symposium has previously been held in Wismar in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2021. In 2010, 2015, 2018 and 2023, it was held in Stockholm. In 2022, it was held in Copenhagen, and in 2024 it was held in Kongsberg.

The symposium aims to attract a broad audience from the fields of science, lighting design, architecture, urban planning and industry, as well as students and teachers of Lighting Design and Architectural Lighting Design programmes, particularly from the four aforementioned partner universities. A conference fee will be charged. Students pay a reduced fee.

The aim is to bring together stakeholders from the worlds of science and practice, share the latest scientific findings and facilitate knowledge transfer. The research findings will be published online by 'IOP Publishing, Conference Series', an internationally recognised publisher of conference proceedings and research findings.

The conference theme is “Responsible Lighting”
The effects of artificial lighting on the environment, and the promotion of its responsible use, are the conference's thematic focus. The Light Symposium 2025 organising committee is calling for conference papers from science and practice focusing on 'Responsible Lighting' and the following key topics: Submissions of research findings and practical application examples are welcome.

  • Impact of artificial lighting on the environment
  • The impact of artificial lighting and daylight on human health
  • The impact of the lighting industry on planetary boundaries
  • Application of lighting in the context of planetary boundaries
  • Light and lighting in a built heritage context

This year, the Light Symposium will introduce the topic of 'Light and Built Heritage' as a new focus. In particular, the challenges of lighting design in the context of listed buildings will be considered. Contributions to the conference on methodological guidance for surveying light in existing buildings and for planning lighting in the context of listed buildings and UNESCO World Heritage Sites are particularly welcome. The aim is to gain new insights into how the general principles of monument conservation can be applied or transferred to artificial lighting in listed buildings and environments.

Drawing on scientific contributions and practical reports, the 'Light Symposium 2025' conference will seek concrete solutions to implement sustainable lighting design, taking into account the above focal points.
