The architect and historian was born in Stettin in 1928 and grew up in Greifswald. On 1 June 1969, Schubert began working at the newly founded Wismar College of Engineering. In 1992, he was taken over by the Wismar University of Applied Sciences and appointed professor of building history and monument preservation at the Department of Architecture. At the age of 65, he retired from active teaching at the Wismar University of Applied Sciences.

Only recently, in spring 2021, Prof. Dr. phil. Dipl.-Ing. Matthias Schubert presented his professional estate to the Müther Archive at Wismar University of Applied Sciences. Among the approximately 800 building files are architectural plans and construction documents of mainly clinic buildings of the University of Rostock, but also of buildings of the Wismar College of Engineering, statistics from research on forecasts for the GDR's university planning and its building requirements. Most of the documents originate from the context of Schubert's activities in Rostock in the 1960s and at the engineering college in Wismar in the 1970s. The documents are currently being sifted through so that they can be viewed by the public in the future.

"Even after his retirement, he was always connected to the Faculty of Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences and was in active exchange with the Baukunstarchiv Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (currently Müther Archive), which is in the process of being founded, to arrange the transfer of his design work to this archive. The faculty will greatly miss his alert mind, his stimulating advice and his critical but always constructive manner of discussion. On behalf of the faculty, I would like to express my condolences on the loss of your father and to send comfort and strength to the relatives for the difficult days ahead." (Excerpt, Prof. Achim Hack, Dean of the Faculty of Design at Wismar University of Applied Sciences)

The Rector, Prof. Dr. Bodo Wiegand-Hoffmeister adds: "Schubert's 20 years of work at the Civil Engineering Section of our predecessor institution, the University of Engineering Wismar, and especially his function as scientific senior assistant for university development planning, had a significant impact on the Wismar campus. In addition, Prof. Schubert had dealt intensively with the history of our predecessor institutions, so that the book "Zur Geschichte des Studiums in Wismar" (On the History of Studies in Wismar) could be published on the occasion of the 100th anniversary in 2008. We are also very grateful to him for this."

The news of the passing of Prof. Dr. phil. Dipl.-Ing. Matthias Schubert fills us with great sadness. We wish the relatives the necessary strength.
