Initially until January 2027, the Weltspiegelhaus at Altwismarstraße 21 in Wismar will be the subject of an elective module run by Prof. Philipp Loeper from the Architecture programme at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, Hochschule Wismar, University of Applied Sciences. Since the start of the 2026/27 winter semester in mid-September, students on this inter-faculty course have been investigating and documenting the building – originally constructed as a cinema – with a view to revitalising it for a new, as yet unimagined use in the heart of the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The building thus currently serves as a real-world testing ground for „urban practice”. Various stakeholders and cultural practitioners are currently taking part in discussions and temporary interventions aimed at revitalising the vacant building. Incidentally, the landlord has made the building available rent-free for a limited period for the purposes of the course. The long-term aim is to establish a not-for-profit use for this site.
„Ideally, this temporary experiment will lead to the building being put to permanent use”, said Prof. Philipp Loeper, „and thus create a special, open space that connects with the city and its people and enriches public life in Wismar”.
