The graduate Adrián Enrique Jaffé has received the "Lucky Strike Junior Designer Award 2022" for the animated film "Blocks", his diploma thesis from the Communication Design and Media course at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Hochschule Wismar, University of Applied Sciences. He shares this award with Aleksandr Aleev from Bauhaus University Weimar. Jaffé's diploma thesis from 2022 was supervised by Prof. Dr. Christine Linke and Robert Löbel. The approximately 3-minute animated film, presented in a minimalist and playful manner, addresses traditional masculinity in pastel tones and illustrates the mutual oppression in the male world. The jury statement by Nina Juric, professor at KISD - Köln International School of Design, reads:
"This work convinced the jury in its elegantly subtle audio-visual narrative and penetrating design. The communication achievement lies in packaging the topic of "toxic masculinity" in the form of a short film in such a way that it indirectly and in a convincing visual and audio language invites the viewer to engage with a rather unpleasant, difficult social pattern and the associated role behaviour, and even to be entertained by it as a viewer:in. (...) The excellent production - from the idea of the form-giving block world, to the system of male stereotypes swinging and sounding to the beat, to the character design and the excellent animation - makes this film a thoroughly successful work with a unique handwriting. We would like to honour that."
A total of around 170 graduates applied for the prizes, each worth 5,000 euros. The three awards were divided by the 8-member jury of experts, so that six winners were selected. A further 34 graduates received special recognition. The award ceremony took place at the stilwerk in Hamburg on Thursday, 10th November 2022. Under the motto "Designing the future matters", the Raymond Loewy Foundation awarded the "Lucky Strike Junior Designer Awards" 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Adrián Enrique Jaffé currently lives and works in Hamburg (Germany). He has already shown his animated film "Blocks" at several film festivals in Europe.
