Aesthetics through upcycling at the Architecture Festival

The individual workshops focussed on questions relating to aesthetics, which could be useful for the circular design of buildings, for example. Photo: Hochschule Wismar, University of Applied Sciences/ FG/ Silke Holtmann

Over 70 students and teachers from Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Thailand and the USA worked on sustainable design concepts. Thanks to the support of Erasmus+ and the DAAD, they were able to take an in-depth look at upcycling and recycling in architecture.

The aim was to develop new architectural concepts and test resource-saving solutions for building components and materials that are destined for demolition. Interdisciplinary teams developed designs for a research laboratory made of circular materials and building components. The final presentations showed creative ideas for sustainable construction methods and conversions. In addition to exciting excursions to Rostock, Rügen and Wismar, the participants gained valuable international experience and made new contacts. The festival made it clear that reuse can not only be sustainable, but also aesthetically enriching.
