(Wismar/Berlin) On Thursday evening, 13th of March 2025, student Ben Passow from the Architecture course at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Hochschule Wismar, University of Applied Sciences was awarded two prizes as part of the 170th AIV Schinkel Competition. For his work “Green Transit Hub”, he received the 1st Diesing Prize, donated by the Karl Friedrich Schinkel Foundation of the AIV, and the special prize, donated by the planning office eZeit Ingenieure GmbH. In addition, architecture student Tatiana Rogozina was honored with the 2nd Diesing Prize for her design “Südkreuz rethought”. The award ceremony took place during the Schinkel Festival in the Georg Neumann Hall of the Jazz Institute Berlin (Einsteinufer 43). Our congratulations!
The students Ben Passow and Tatiana Rogozina had both taken the design course “Berlin Competition Studio II – Schinkel Prize Architecture” in the winter semester 2024/ 25 with professorship representatives Daniel Hülseweg, Prof. Philipp Quack and Prof. Simon Takasaki-Lauw. They submitted their two results to the competition.
The Architects' and Engineers' Association of Berlin Brandenburg (AIV) has launched the competition for young people this time under the title “Cleverly listed” to generate ideas for the new S-Bahn line between Südkreuz station and Park am Gleisdreieck in Berlin. The tasks were put out to tender in the six specialist areas of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, traffic planning, structural engineering and fine art. A redesign of the western and eastern station forecourt was expected in the architecture category, among others. The competition brief called for current urban sociological and social topics. The ideas and funding competition is not aimed at immediate feasibility and thus creates scope for creatively conceived results.
In his design, Ben Passow pursues the central idea of an urban multifunctional space. To this end, he is transforming the existing Südkreuz railroad junction. His idea is to combine transportation, sustainability, social participation and cultural dynamics at this location. He is integrating the previously isolated location into a lively network by connecting the station with the surrounding urban fabric at certain points. From interactive events to urban farms and a technology center, Ben is pursuing a modular approach that allows for flexible adaptations. “Sustainable use of resources and the reuse of building materials merge with urban planning approaches to unite nature and technology in a flexible overall concept,” says student Ben Passow, explaining his idea.
The competition entry submitted by Tatiana Rogozina also aims to create a sustainable, integrative urban structure. Her architectural design offers socially minded solutions. Her idea is to provide homeless people with housing and low-threshold employment opportunities. With a park spanning several roofs, Tatiana's design connects the districts separated by the train station. In this way, she simultaneously creates a meeting place and a more liveable urban space.
The award-winning works from the AIV Schinkel Competition 2025 will be on display in the auditorium of Berlin University of the Arts (Hardenbergstraße 33, 10623 Berlin) until 25th March 2025 and can be viewed daily from 9:00 a.m, to 8:00 p.m.. The opening of the exhibition took place on Thursday, 13th March 2025.
The “AIV Schinkel Prize”, also known as the Schinkel Prize for short, is a sponsorship competition organized by the Architects' and Engineers' Association of Berlin-Brandenburg (AIV). It is traditionally presented on the birthday of the Prussian architect and master builder Karl Friedrich Schinkel, born on 13th March 1781 in Neuruppin. In 2025, 73 entries were submitted to the competition for young architects, 16 of which were awarded prizes, including three Schinkel Prizes. A total of around 32,700 euros in prize money was awarded, according to the organizer's media release.
